Summary of Contributions

This work has suggested several modifications and improvements to the model proposed by ETSI as suitable for modelling individual clocks in a SDH synchronisation network architecture. It has been shown that the standards proposed for the quality of individual clocks is compatible with the wander limits in a worst case synchronisation network. The extended noise model has shown that such clocks can comfortably satisfy the network wander specifications. The model parameters could be altered to more accurately reflect the behaviour of a given clock implementation if physical measurements of its wander were made. It could then be verified that a given implementation satisfied the network limits for wander. The work has also brought together the main issues in the control of wander within SDH networks which can act as useful tool for persons or organisations to which the subject is of interest.
