TDEV Response to Different Noise Types

It is reported [1] that TDEV also has the highly desirable property in that it can discriminate between the various power-law noise processes as each correspond to different slopes of TDEV. This behaviour is detailed in table 4.1.

Table 4.1:   Behaviour of TDEV due to Typical Noise Processes
Noise Process Slope of $TDEV(\tau)$
White Phase Modulation $\tau^{-\frac{1}{2}}$
Flicker Phase Modulation $\tau^{0}$
White Frequency Modulation $\tau^{\frac{1}{2}}$
Flicker Frequency Modulation $\tau$
Random Walk Frequency Modulation $\tau^{\frac{3}{2}}$
