Noise Theory and Phaselock Loops

This chapter presents theory in order to understand concepts arising from the model presented in the previous chapter. Some definitions of measures of frequency stability are presented in order to define the physical quantity being simulated at the model output. A classification of noise types in terms of the power spectral density is reproduced to allow the noise types assumed present in clocks to be highlighted in later chapters. This material is then used to show the function of a filter present in the model. Finally, a general theory of phaselock loops is presented so that it may be subsequently shown that the model can be interpreted as a particular type of phaselock loop.
